English Class Activities – Pronunciation Drill
Our dynamic dot stickers and progress charts can be used by English Teachers as a method of tracking progress and awarding merit to students learning English as a second language.
Class Type: English Pronunciation – Listening & Speaking
Class size: up to 20
Teaching Aids Required: Dynamic Dots and Progress Charts for each student
Method:
- Write on the board the target pronunciation for the lesson and a set of similar sounding words, giving each one of them coordinates, for example:
1 | 2 | |
A | lat | rat |
B | lice | rice |
C | lack | rack |
D | lest | rest |
E | load | road |
- Let students know you are going to give them a listening and speaking drill which will be judged by you and the rest of the class. By the end of the lesson you should have them mastering these pron sets.
- Demonstrate the pronunciation of each pair and the L/R concept in this example.
Listening Test 1:
- Start the first listening test. Randomly read out 1 or 2 going from A to E. Have students write down what they hear.
- Make sure to note down yourself which one you have said.
- Ask students to swap papers and check answers with the person next to them.
Listening/Speaking Test 2:
- Putting the winner(s) from the listening test on the spot, let’s say John got 5/5, ask John to stand up and read out randomly the same list. Have other students write down what they can hear John saying.
- As the teacher, you should also write down what you can hear.
- Have John reveal the answers (usually quite funny) and let the class discuss whether it was Johns wrong pronunciation or the other students bad listening that caused any discrepancies.
Listening/Speaking Test 3:
- Depending on how students are doing with this set of pronunciation pairs. Have students form groups of 2 and perform this same test on each other.
- Walk around the class and make sure students are pronunciating correctly.
- If you find that a student has mastered the pron set, place a dynamic dot sticker on their progress chart for that pronunciation set.
